Leadership is key – Bosch

Leadership and Organizational Development

“Leadership is key“

Interview with Eduardo Watty

Mr. Watty, German companies are increasingly complaining about the shortage of skilled workers. Is that also an issue in Mexico?

Skilled workers are of high importance not only in Mexico but worldwide. In the sixties, Bosch Mexico started to implement an apprenticeship program based on the German education system at plants in Toluca, San Luis and Juarez. Combined with our Bosch Values, we have managed to retain a high percentage of skilled and trained workforce after the educational program ends.

Bosch is like an industrial icon in Germany. Do you also benefit from this good reputation in Mexico, for example, when recruiting for your new factory?

In 2019, Forbes magazine recognized Bosch as one of the most loved companies in Mexico to work with. We have been in Mexico for more than 65 years and our reputation, high product standards, innovation, commitment, global footprint, and associates have helped the business grow throughout these years.

Bosch is about to open a modern Industry 4.0 facility in Celaya and is expanding the Guadalajara Engineering Center to support the upcoming IoT strategy and digital transformation that attracts young software engineers and programmers.

What about the topic of leadership in Mexico? Are there any differences between there and Europe?

Leadership is key. There is no difference between Mexico and Europe. As an international player, we have global and local leaders who work according to our values worldwide as One Bosch. Nonetheless, in order to be successful, it is important to consider the local culture and adapt to the new digital trends using transformational leadership.

Finally, a personal question: What do you like about Bosch, because it is very German?

I like working at Bosch because it is a global company dedicated to innovation. In particular, the structure, processes, norms, and goal orientation have helped the company to become a successful enterprise.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work in the US, Germany and Mexico, gaining expertise in different fields and projects. There, I was exposed to interesting challenges and developed new business models. Yet, very exciting times are coming in regard to digitization, IoT, Industry 4.0, service solutions, electrified, autonomous and connected driving, in which Bosch has positioned itself as a market leader. I am proud to be part of this great team #LikeABosch.
